Overview

Portugal’s Golden Visa remains one of Europe’s most sought-after residency routes, now anchored to regulated investment funds rather than direct real estate. A €500,000 subscription to a qualifying fund secures residency for the whole family, with one of the lightest stay requirements in the European Union: roughly seven days a year. After five years, holders may apply for permanent residence or citizenship.

Who it’s for

The route suits investors who want a European Union foothold with genuine optionality, a fund rather than a property to manage, and almost no obligation to be in the country. It is built for non-residents: families across the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East who want Portugal as an anchor without relocating to it.

What it includes

  • Residency for the applicant, spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents, on a single subscription
  • Visa-free travel across the 29-country Schengen Area
  • A renewable residence permit, conditional on holding the fund subscription
  • A path to permanent residence or citizenship after five years
  • A minimal stay requirement of roughly seven days per year
  • No tax liability arising from the residency itself

What it requires

  • A €500,000 subscription to a CMVM-regulated qualifying fund
  • A Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a local bank relationship, which we arrange
  • Proof of a clean criminal record and a lawful source of funds
  • No language, education, or income thresholds at the application stage

How Eterna supports your application

We run the file end to end, and we manage the fund your client subscribes to.

  1. Structure and onboarding. We arrange your NIF, power of attorney, and bank account, and complete fund onboarding and source-of-funds checks.
  2. Subscription. You subscribe to the Atlantic Zenith Fund, the vehicle we manage with our Portuguese partners, to be authorised and regulated by the CMVM.
  3. Application. We compile and notarise the file and submit your AIMA residency application.
  4. Review and biometrics. We accompany the AIMA review and your biometric appointment in Portugal.
  5. Residence and beyond. Your residence card is issued, renewable toward permanent residence or citizenship at year five.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Portugal Golden Visa lead to citizenship?

It can. After five years of lawful residence, holders may apply for permanent residence or for citizenship, subject to a basic Portuguese language requirement and the usual integrity checks. The Golden Visa secures the residence right; citizenship requires meeting the naturalisation criteria.

How many days a year do I need to be in Portugal?

Very few. The programme requires roughly seven days a year on average, which makes it one of the lightest residency obligations in the European Union.

Who manages the fund?

We do, alongside our regulated Portuguese partners. The Atlantic Zenith Fund is to be authorised and regulated by the CMVM, with an independent depositary. Because we run the vehicle rather than refer you to a third party, the same team is accountable for both your investment and your residency file.

Can I exit the fund early?

The fund is open-ended and built for the residency horizon. Redemption terms are set out in the fund documentation, and we walk you through them before you subscribe, including how an exit interacts with your residence permission.

Who can be included in the application?

The principal applicant, their spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents, all on a single subscription, all receiving equivalent residence rights.

What return can I expect?

The fund has a defined target return profile and distribution policy. Because this is a regulated investment, we share the figures and the full fund documentation directly with you and your adviser, rather than publishing projections.

Why Portugal.

Since the real estate route closed in 2023, the Portugal Golden Visa runs through qualifying investment funds - giving a non-EU family renewable residence in return for a qualifying fund investment. Here is why clients choose it.

01

A path to EU citizenship

Eligible to apply after ten years from the issuance of your residence permit.

02

Low physical presence

7 days in the first year, then 14 days in each subsequent two-year period keeps your residence permit valid and maintains your eligibility for citizenship.

03

Schengen access

Live in Portugal, an EU member state, and travel visa-free across all 29 Schengen countries.

04

One investment, three generations

Covers the applicant, spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents, on a single qualifying investment.

05

Permanent residence at five years

Qualify for permanent residence after five years, without relocating to Portugal, with basic (A2) Portuguese required.

06

Tax advantages for qualifying residents

Potential access to the IFICI regime for those who become Portuguese tax residents and qualify.

Atlantic Zenith Fund

A Portuguese Golden Visa investment, built differently

Most Golden Visa funds concentrate your capital in a handful of hotel or real estate assets. We built the Atlantic Zenith Fund to work differently: diversified, meaning your capital is not tied to a single sector; open-ended, with subscriptions and redemptions as set out in the fund documents, including notice periods; and priced daily, meaning you always know the current value of your investment.

Why a fund?

Portugal's real estate route closed in 2023, so the Golden Visa now runs through qualifying investment funds. Most funds concentrate the full €500,000 in hospitality assets in one sector. The Atlantic Zenith Fund spreads it across a diversified portfolio of Portuguese stocks and bonds alongside global asset-backed holdings - 65% Portugal, 35% global - so no single asset, operator or sector carries your outcome.

Why this fund?

This fund is backed by three separate institutions, each with its own duty. Heed Capital, an established Portuguese fund manager with a 20+ year track record, manages the fund. Bison Bank, supervised by the Bank of Portugal, holds the assets as independent depositary. Eterna International handles your route to residence. No single party prices, holds and sells its own assets.

Why this investment profile?

€500,000 into a professionally managed portfolio of marketable securities - assets that price daily and can be sold when the time comes. Built for long-term growth and backed by Eterna International's fund management heritage dating back to 1928. Dividends and defined exit terms are set out in the fund documents. Capital is at risk.

Our Portuguese Golden Visa fund is set to launch in September 2026. Fund terms, target returns and fees are set out in the fund documents and may change; capital is at risk. The €500,000 must remain invested through the required ARI holding period.

Frequently asked questions.

If yours isn't here, ask the desk →

Beyond the €500,000, what is the total cost?
The qualifying investment is €500,000 into the Atlantic Zenith Fund. On top of that sit professional and government fees, confirmed with you before filing. Fund terms and fees are set out in the fund documents.
How many days a year do I need to spend in Portugal, and how long does the residence last?
Seven days in the first year, then 14 days in each subsequent two-year period. The residence permit is a two-year renewable permit, and keeping the stay requirement maintains both the permit and your eligibility for citizenship.
Can this lead to Portuguese (EU) citizenship, and how long does it take?
Yes. You become eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship ten years from the issuance of your residence permit. Permanent residence is available after five years, without relocating to Portugal, with basic (A2) Portuguese required.
What if the Portuguese rules change again?
The real estate route closed in 2023 and the qualifying-fund route is the framework in force today. The Atlantic Zenith Fund is open-ended, with two thirds in listed securities and redemption terms set out in the fund documents. Final eligibility is confirmed through the application process. Previous rule changes have not been applied retroactively to existing permit holders, but future treatment cannot be guaranteed.
How does the Atlantic Zenith Fund work, and is my capital at risk?
Your €500,000 goes into a diversified portfolio of Portuguese stocks and bonds alongside global asset-backed holdings - 65% Portugal, 35% global. Heed Capital manages the fund, Bison Bank holds the assets as independent depositary, and Eterna International handles your route to residence. As with any investment, capital is at risk.
What happens to my Golden Visa if I exit the fund early?
The €500,000 must remain invested through the required ARI holding period; exiting before then can affect your residence permit. Defined exit terms are set out in the fund documents, and we walk you through how an exit interacts with your residence before you subscribe.
